Oscar the cat from Pets Place is now 17 years old. He is my true Worcester Park hero and deserves some kind of recognition.
Can we start a campaign to make him Mayor Of Worcester Park or something? He is by far the best ambassador for this town (WP Blogger aside, of course).
I go to Pets Place every week to buy cat food but really think it's to see Oscar! He's gorgeous and usually sitting outside on a birdtable watching the goings on in Central Road or inside Superdrug! He doesn't show any interest in me! until I start giving his head and under his chin a good old rub! Yes I agree he is a Worcester Park hero and deserves recognition.
I quite like the pic of WP but if a search is on for a new one, why not get a photo of Oscar with WP in background? He always brings a smile to those who know him.
Oscar does deserve some recognition - he is a good Ambassador for WP and Pets Place. I wonder how he is coping with all the work that is going on in the shop - looks like it is going to be good - in time for the beginning of December I am told!
Does anyone know of any organised New Years Eve fireworks in the area?
You used to be able to walk to the top of the lookout at the Hamptons and see the fireworks in central London, but since they decided to build more flats and let it get overgrown there isnt much of a view.
I've recently moved into Worcester Park and generally find the retail owners very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Apart from, that is, the Sainsbury's Local. A couple of the staff are rude and never say thank you at the tills. The manager is moody, unfriendly, unsmiling and looks entirely peed off with his job. Not to mention the old codger of a security guard who stares at everyone as though they're pilfering klemtomaniac while often having his mobile to his ear, walking around like an old coot with a load in his pants. I live literally yards from that shop, but after a few unpleasant experiences will never ever go in there again...even if it means I have to walk further to get a pint of milk!!
As a new development in the mosque/non-mosque story I see that Bank Chambers has just been put up for let, details here- http://www.drakesfield.co.uk/Green%20Lane_Worcester%20Park.pdf
I was wondering if you could please mention on your blog our school -St Cecilia's Catholic Primary School, London Road. It is our Christmas Fair on Saturday 3 December 2011, from 1pm - 4pm.
Hi just like to say a BIG thank you for the organisation of this years WP Christmas Night. It was indeed an auspicious occasion for all ages. It was lovely to see so many people of all ages enjoing themselves - my family included. Thanks and wish you all a Happy Christmas and wonderful New Year Nadia
Would like to know who the d...head is who decided to dump their old mattress on the corner of Green Lane under the trees by Beverley Brook!
If you are reading this then thanks very much for dumping your rubbish and creating an eyesore for the rest of us. I really hope you have been caught on cctv aand the police get you for flytipping.
I am not sure if the Hercules Balmoral ladies bike also dumped on Green Lane raises or matches the piano. I cycled it back home from the pub despite no gears, 2 flat tyres, a broken seat and a rusty chain. It was like this one http://www.cyclerepairman.co.uk/Hercules-Balmoral-classic--vintage--bicycle-21%60-frame--trade-in-cycle./1494.htm
I am currently restoring in for my wife, awesome. Parkerilla I hope you are doing the same with that piano, having seen the state it was in, that looked more of a task than mine!
So....the One Stop Party Shop is no more meaning no more balloons being dragged home in a bin bag...quite sad about that as we now have no party shops left in WP.....and yes Oscar is the WP hero! Cool 4 Cats!
as the one stop party shop is no more and I have been left out of pocket with no dj, cake or decorations for a childs party on Saturday, does anyone know of a dj, cake person extraordinaire and balloon deocoration specialistt to save the day
As everyone seems to be in the festive spirit even in this economic despair, I wonder what Road in WP has the most festive spirit. Might be good to have this as an open competition. Who's your vote?
Easy access from the London bound platform. Two flights of steps to the street from the opposite platform. Either a two person process or a bump down every step! Alternatively continue to Stoneleigh Station where you can then walk to the other side of the platform and return to Worcester Park to the London bound platform. Although Stoneleigh takes you into another Zone. Apparently you can call for assistance at Worcester Park but as the Station is not manned full time during operating hours I am not sure how that is meant to work.
Worcester Park is a busy station and the vast majority of residents are nice (despite what you may sometimes read in the comments on this blog!), so there is normally somebody who will help you with the steps to/from the southbound platform.
Rather than needlessly wasting time getting off and on again at Stoneleigh station and waiting for the next train to come back to Worcester Park, the brighter local mums simply get off at Worcester Park and ask for one of their many fellow commuters alighting at the station to help them down the steps with their buggy... it's been going on around here for generations! Simples!
And if you need to cross the main road, simply stop at the traffic lights, press the pedestrian button and wait for the green man. But if your IQ is measured in single digits, you could take a 213 bus to Sutton, dismount it at the end of the route, wait for it to turn round, then get back on, then return to Worcester Park and get off on the other side of the road! Doh!!!
You always see passengers helping people with buggies down from the Surrey-bound platform - I can't believe people actually go to Stoneleigh to turn round! However, none of this should be necessary much beyond another year. Once the accessibility works are completed at Vauxhall and Earlsfield stations next year, the Department for Transport's Access for All funding will be spent on stations beyond zones 2/3 including Worcester Park, Putney and Twickenham.
hi. yes there was a female tabby at the pet shop too but she was unfortunately run over. I used to work in the pet shop when this happened years ago poor little thing.
Oscar the cat is just too cute for words always stroke him whenever i see him! ^^ oscar for mayor. Welcome to the area for the new people and anyone else think we should have so area for young people to go? Like in stoneligh they have the cafe??
Regrettably there are now few oak trees remaining in Oaks Avenue, but it is pleasant and neighbourly. Probably the worst thing is the eyesore of a gigantic caravan (more like a white shipping container on wheels), which is permanently moored diagonally across an entire front garden near the top of the hill.
As well as reducing light levels, it’s undoubtedly reducing the value of all properties within eyeshot, so maybe now is the time to buy, before the circus moves on, the road loses the look of an industrial estate and property prices take a leap back upwards.
I will be very sad not to see Oscar anymore as I go past each day on the 213 or X26! I always look out for him perched on his birdtable having a nap, and he makes my day! I thought maybe it was too cold for him at the mo and he would be back later in the year, but if he has retired, he deserves it! As a Sutton resident, I have only met him once - he slept right through his head rub - but on a long boring journey to/from Kingston he raised a smile!
I don't think Oscar has retired yet! He became ill about 3-4 weeks ago and was recovering at a staff members flat. I was in Pets Place on Sunday and he is now back, thankfully! But I didn't see him as they said he was in Superdrug! So I reckon he was pleased to be back to his usual routine!
What does it matter if they want to talk about Oscar? If they are supposedly sad then so are you because you obviously read the posts and then decided to comment too! The world would be a boring place indeed if everybody talked about the exact same things and had the same opinions. You need to be more accepting of others.
Anybody know why the road under the bridge at the station is going to be closed on Feb 12th? Is it anything to do with the recent short spells of roadworks adjacent to the Manor Drive? What are the diversion routes going to be? Bearing in mind the history of late running roadworks in Worcester Park can we guarantee that the road will be open on the Monday? Also there has been a lot of surveying being done down Green Lane but nobody is wearing an identifiable company clothing. Again I ask anybody got any answers?
Few things make a town look scruffier than fly-posting. It's very noticeable that the problem is endemic in London Borough of Sutton, who clearly aren't interested in dealing with it. In the Borough of Epsom & Ewell fly-posting appears to be much less of a problem, most likely because the residents and Council refuse to tolerate it.
As to Worcester Park, the offenders include : Buyers of scrap cars and vans. The local scout troop - the leader of which should be setting a better example. So-called 'raves'. The church at the bottom of The Avenue. All seem to appear surreptitiously overnight. All, large or small, are illegal under Sec. 224 Town & Country Planning Act 1990 (unlawful display of advertisements) and / or Sec. 132 Highways Act 1980 (unauthorised signs on highway).
How to deal with it? Very simple, if everyone removed any, and all, fly-posting on or abutting public streets the impact would soon be obvious. Some people appear to think that they are somehow not allowed to remove fly-posting - absurd.
I have a really bizarre request, does anyone know where our rubbish from WP gets taken, for example what plant does the recycling go to, what dump/landfill does the rest go to? It's for a school thing and I can't find it anywhere on LBS website.
Did anyone see the car fire on Malden Road by the Plough Green shops today? I called the fire brigade when I saw a huge amount of black smoke rising over the rooftops from my house in Old Malden and they told me that the fire brigade were attending a car fire. I drove by later and the car was totally burnt out. I hope no one was hurt.
I sent the following to LBS "Traffic and Transport", RBK and TfL on Wednesday morning :
"Notices are up stating that the road beneath Worcester Park railway bridge will be closed "for 1 day on Sunday 12th February". There is nothing on the LBS, RBK or TfL Websites. Does that mean that the road will not actually be closed but restricted? There really should be some info on your Website."
Not one of them has replied. I daresay I shall get replies next week, when it's all over!
Re Anon 10/2 @ 11.07. Glad to see that someone else made an effort to find out why the road under the bridge should have been shut. The signs, whilst they were there, had a link to Surrey County Council. Needless to say that when checking their website because Worcester Park falls into London boroughs I was unable to find out any information. All prepared to make a note of the telephone contact number and then the signs vanished! The bridge remained open almost as if the event was never going to take place. So thanks anon, at least I didn't imagine the signs were there. However, still no nearer finding out why the road was going to be closed. Now puzzled as to why it wasn't shut and when (if) it will be shut in the future. Anyone out there able to shed any light on this mystery?
As a parent who will - in the near future - be looking at local schools I would be interested to see more comments from parents with children at Cheam Common Infants, Green Lane and Dorchester Schools. How happy are you with the school? Any improvements? Ofsted reports are helpful but I think hearing the opinions of parents is important (There is a link now on Ofsted reports for parents views but as it is new there are no comments as yet). Thanks.
On the subject of dumped matresses... The 1 dumped in the little park, on the end of Buckland Way, where the cut through is across the Hamptons into Browning Avenue. It's been there for months! Lib Dems first action....get rid of that thing!!
Further to my posting of 10th, I received this reply from LBS yesterday :
"I apologise that this response is after the event, but I would like to confirm that these signs were placed by a Traffic Management company working on behalf of Surrey County Council. They were intended to give motorists advanced warning of works that were to take place on Sunday 12 February 2012. However, they put them up on the wrong road. The signs were meant to be placed for works planned on that date for the Cheam Road in Ewell."
Hi WP residents, We are looking to move to Oaks Ave (sale agreed), though we have had subsidence come up on the survey, and as a result have not found anyone willing to insure the property. Does anyone else have this issue, and can they recommend insurers, or explain how they have got around the issue? cheers!
Thank you to all you people who wasted your vote on Thursday. Hope you wont spend time on here moaning about the state of WP if you didnt even try to do something to help. On the subject of Primary schools, Green Lane are very welcoming and actively invite you to look around before making your choice.
I see the To Let sign has been taken down from the Old Bank Buildings in Green Lane and on Saturday as I was passing there were a group of Muslims, complete with long beards, headgear and full length clothing standing outside as if they were waiting to be let in, anyone know what is happening.
Well done anon for solving the mystery of the roadworks that never were. Hopefully the same company is not being used to put up the signage for the Olympic cycling. Nine circuits of Kingshill will be somewhat less of a challenge than Box Hill!

Love the new layout, but please can you change the masthead photo? Your facebook one also shows a snowy scene!
Hey Jess Ops,
This is Oscar's thread!!!! Unless you were requesting the photo to be of him, which would be a good idea!

How do you start a new thread then? I thought it was a general discussion.
(Oscar always gets a chin tickle from me though)
Sorry, dont like the layout! It feels all back to front. Its like being back in Waitrose when they first messed around with it:(
Oscar is a Worcester Park institution!

I totally agree, wish there were more Oscars about to make the town a happier place
I do think he should hav a plaque somewhere....maybe on the pet shop wall outside
