Ex Council Leader Pleads Guilty

The Ex Liberal Democrat leader of Kingston Council, Derek Osbourne has admitted possessing and distributing more than 5,000 indecent images of children.

Readers will remember the Council leader, 59, being arrested in June leading to him stepping down as Council Leader, resigning his council seat and from the Liberal Democrats after being suspended by the party. This triggered a by-election for his seat in Beverley ward which was won by Conservative, Terry Paton.

Mr Osbourne has admitted possessing and distributing more than 5,000 indecent images of children and pleaded guilty today to 17 counts of making and distributing such images at Southwark Crown Court. According to the prosecution, these included images of children as young as three-years-old being raped or subjected to sexual violence and also "stomach churning" images of adults engaged in bestiality.

Judge Alistair McCreath has given Mr Osbourne bail until October 29, to allow time for the probation service to draw up pre-sentence reports, however he said he did not want to give Osbourne "false hope" that he would be spared prison. He said it is a "virtual certainty that a prison sentence will follow."
