Pastor Away

In case you've missed it in the local and now national media, Pastor Robert Dando from Worcester Park Baptist Church (centre) is in a spot of bother, facing child sex charges in the US.

A spokeswoman for the Baptist Union of Great Britain has confirmed that Dando (who lives on The Hamptons development in Worcester Park) was being held at the Fairfax Detention Centre in Fairfax County.

"He has tendered his resignation from Worcester Park Baptist Church with immediate effect. The church and his family would welcome some space at this difficult time," she said.

That's more comment than you'll get from the Church's website, which is suddenly unavailable.

Jesus. Sorry, but I think blasphemy is appropriate here.

Glad I'm an atheist, that's all I can say.

Well done on the 'Worcester Park blog' but I think your flippant terminology ie 'spot of bother' is in bad taste. Child sex crimes are very serious indeed.

I agree with you that the Church Website should be available and if they want to comment on this they should do so very quickly and get on with what they excel at which is sharing their faith and supporting the community regardless of peoples religeous beliefs.

They are not responsible for this mans actions no matter how well they think they know him.

I think his family need some privacy and support from their community also.

Normally I would not make an anonymous comment but I don't think my name serves any purpose here, I'm just someone who lives locally who has been to this church on occasion - it's a lovely place)

God that's depressing

Anonymous - I think you're forgetting that he has not been tried yet, let alone convicted. Yes, child sex abuse is very serious but we do not know yet where he is guilty or not.

So I stand by the fact that he is in a spot of bother. Of course if he is convicted of these offenses then he will be in something altogether different.

Until then, I shall not be rushing to judge - a Christian lesson which I'm sure will have been preached from time to time at the church which you attended.

That's right Worcester Park he may not have been convicted yet but they must have some pretty hot evidence against him to track him down all the way over here in little ol WP ! They dont do that on a sniff usually...

Jesus will forgive him apparently so he can do what he likes.

Fair enough that he hasn't been convicted yet, but It is yet another black mark against the Church as a whole. Why does there seem to be such correlation between clergymen and child abuse? It's disgusting, and to think of the furore over a mosque being built round the corner. I don't remember the last time I read about Muslims defiling our children, but they are hated, and priests/vicars are still revered!

Joke

Not sure it is a black mark against the Church as a whole - it is noticeably rare in Protestant Churches. I must admit that the Catholic way of having priests that are forbidden to marry seems to be looking for trouble, although trouble happens in a tiny percentage of cases (not a correlation at all), as are the honour-killings that you hear about elsewhere...

I agree - there was probably quite a bit of evidence and concern if they tracked him down here.
Why it happens at Churches - this happens everywhere, but generally if someone wants to be in contact with children, they may find a way to be near them, e.g. working in a Church.
It doesnt matter where it happens, people should be held responsible and go through appropriate procedures - i.e. justice system.
