Nice To Eat You

Worcester Park is fortunate to have many great cafes and restaurants. And KFC. Below are my thoughts on our various eateries. Add yours via the comments form below!

Avventura (Italian): First class, authentic Italian food cooked by chefs with  Michelin-starred restaurant backgrounds. Top quality ingredients, great flavours and superb service. Full review here. CLOSED AUGUST 2011

Zarahs (Bangladeshi Indian): Great takeaway food in Windsor Road. Fantastic flavours - definitely not just your bog standard tikka massala here! Great value meal deal offers always available.

The Chef (Chinese): Decent and reliable, but not spectacularly tasty. £16 per head order as much as you like is great, but we never make it past the starters!

Caffe Piccolo (Italian): Part of a small chain of local restaurants. Nothing fantastic, but I enjoyed my recent visit there - accessible food, popular with families. CLOSED NOVEMBER 2009

La Mama (Italian): Looks wonderfully inviting - passing it almost daily for two years I vowed I'd go there and try it one day. Two years' anticipation turned into the disappointment of a lasagne that tasted of canned tomato soup. Now renovated and looking very modern. Not had a meal there recently but was made a very nice cappuccino...

Bombay Masala (Indian) formerly Le Kitchen: Once this was my favourite but several management changes on it's very hit and miss. My last order consisted of four different dishes which remarkably managed to taste the same. Won't be ordering from them again, I'm afraid.

De Niro's (Fast Food): CLOSED APRIL 2009

Chubby's (Burgers, Kebabs, Pizza): Have only tried it once. OK, but not a match for the supremely brilliant Surry Nefis

Pizza Express (erm...): Well, it's a Pizza Express.

Meghna (Indian): Decent Indian food. £9.99 Mon-Thurs deal (£10.95 on Fridays) is definitely worth trying and great value for money. Superbly friendly staff compete the experience.

Shalimar (Indian): Well, it's opposite The Plough, so technically Old Malden. But what the heck - decent Indian food, Raja & Sara make excellent hosts but the slow service is a let down.

Surrey Nefis (Fast Food): Chicken kebab, pitta bread, small chips - salad, no cabbage. Extra chilli sauce. Thanks.

Kingfish (Fish & Chips): Modestly decent fish and chips. Does well, but could do batter. Mwahahaha.

Ryan Gate (kebabs, shawarma, miscallenous Lebanese delights): Fantastic shawarma, samosas and lebanses pies. Pizza is actually very good, when they are serving it, that is..

Silks (Italian, Thai, Chinese - Fusion food): Silks closed on January 1st 2009 (Full review here)

Chinese Canteen: Decent takeaway Chinese food, cooked to order in the open kitchen while you wait. Consistent and reliable - my Chinese of choice!

Classic Wok (Chinese): Good food, good value for money. But my loyalty is still with Chinese Canteen!

The Munal (Nepalese): Subtly different to Indian cuisine - more flavoursome and aromatic. Can highly recommend the £9.95 Mon-Thurs set meal. Well worth a visit.

Berties (was 'Cafe Experience'): Closed June 2009

Cuppaholic (cafe): You might have missed this one - it's in the small parade of shops, just by the station. Full marks to the hard working staff here, but the food barely hits the 'average' mark. Closed 2010.

Ginger & Garlic (Sri Lankan / Asian takeaway): CLOSED DOWN. Full review here.

Papa Johns: Cheap, stodgy and nasty when I tried it, but always seems busy. If only they were as good as making pizza as they are at parking illegally on pavements.

KFC: I went there once because everything else was shut. I was so ashamed that I scrubbed myself with carbolic soap for a month afterwards.

Midas Touch: Trendy bar feel to this place. The Midas Touch Burger is a consistent winner, though. A popular choice with families at weekends. Now called The Brook.

The Brook: The Midas Touch with greater emphasis on food and classic retro décor. Sizeable portions of very agreeable food. Excellent value for money with your KT4 discount card.

Checkers Sandwich Bar: Can't fault Joe for his cheerfulness, but the food was bland. The floor could do with a deep clean and the waitress dashing outside for a cigarette in between serving didn't create the best impression.

Sheesh Mangal: A very pleasant lunch was had here quite a while ago. Been meaning to go back...

Bronco's: The play area at the back makes this a hit with families with young children no matter what the quality of the rest of the experience. Service professionalism is variable but friendly - seems to be improving. Food quality is generally very good. Not cheap but hey you get to have a nice meal while the kids keep themselves entertained...

Still to be explored:
Ocean Fish Bar, Royal India, Bellini.

Your comments welcomed - especially on the ones I've missed!

Given the recent hoo-har (that's a technical term) about the quality of the restaurants in Worcester Park, especially regarding the star hygiene ratings, I am including this link to the Food Standards Agency page which lists the ratings for all food serving premises in KT4 (you need to scroll down a bit to see them). (Thanks blog reader Adrian for the idea). I hope as well as giving people more information to help them decide where to eat, it will give a direct incentive to local restaurants to improve their star ratings, leading to better quality restaurants in Worcester Park, better eating for Worcester Parkers and eventually, when things have turned around, an enviable reputation for Worcester Park as being one of the best places around to eat! Go to it...

That's a "bellyfull of fine ale" spelling and punctuation if ever I've seen it Sir! Good luck with the alarm clock tomorrow morning!

Is La Mama now closed? There is a notice in the window thanking people for their custom and saying they would be back.

Had a risotto in La Mama once. Bit average.

The best food in Worcester Park has to be Bellini's, not tasted anything better, great selection, great service and best of all the food is fantastic!

Scott said...

Yes i agree with Michael, my family & i eat at Bellini's regularly and always made to feel very welcome, the food is great and we are never rushed.

Mr Dubious said...

Bellini's manager is back posting again!

I definitely agree re Meghna. After a few dull experiences elsewhere, including places where I used to be loyal, I have the impression that there is a curry supplier to the trade who must sell large tubs of tomato soup-based ready-mix, which can simply be warmed to order. The freshness at Meghna is different, and thoroughly enjoyable. I also like the fact that the owner treats me like his best mate whenever I go there.

Megnha - ordered delivery twice now. Both orders were wrong when they arrived. Not good.

Jules said...

No he isn't ! I posted that post and I'm female and have
no input into Bellini's. my family and I just enjoy the food
there, plan and simple!

they are good, just very very busy i guess.. i had meghna food and there is no where else i would turn to.. i guess there are other hungry desperate customers like me waiting to salivate their yummy curries.

I went to Meghna Friday (2nd time) and the food was fantastic. Lamb rogan gosh was so so gooood. Like the fact with that 'starter, main, rice or naan and a side offer for £10.95' on fri/sat, you basically get the full works Indian meal between 2 for £32 (inc 2 drinks)! Maybe that's why it's so popular. Same meal with no discount somewhere else would be £44. Definitely go again.

Not seeing the Sunshine Cafe mentioned much on here. A cracking little greasy spoon. Decent grub and the staff are friendly to boot. Best enjoyed with a hangover, but still good without. Like to also mention that Meghna is a cracking place for a Ruby Murray.....

I used to go for coffee at Costa, until I tried the Sunshine Café. The staff are lovely and it's beautifully clean. There's a revelation waiting beyond the red façade!

sharon said...

oh yes yes yes.. definitely my favorite eatery Meghna.. they are just so different to other indian's. you can sense the freshness coming from their food.. Sunshine cafe, got to try them.

another great meal at meghna gosh they were very busy tonight

I worked there when I was a teenager and I saw some questionable sights.

If the head chef is still a chain smoking, binge drinking little imp called Johnny stay well away!

FYI - Have not been back since I was a teenager...

Try osaka opposite the plough, efficient service and great food

I went to indulgence cafe opposite the harvester today, I have to say its very nice, the food was delicious, and they do freshly made juices too!

Had a lovely meal at The Brook (formerly Midas Touch) on Wednesday evening...friendly staff, good food, reasonable price & the added bonus of being able to walk home.

Violet said...

Had an evening meal at the Brook last week, we weren't too impressed, thought it overpriced and thought the menu was uninspiring, especially the starters, which were mainly fish or seafood. Carrot & coriander soup was tasteless, I think perhaps they forgot the coriander! A lot of the mains didn't come with veg or salad, so that was extra, green salad mainly lambs lettuce, a bit of rocket and a few green beans, drenched in dressing. Service was good but overall would give it an 'average' rating.

Looking for a 'greasy spoon' breakfast on Sunday morning after night before and came across Express-O Cafe in WP, without a doubt the best breakfast I have had in years (a greasy spoon without the grease) - good quality produce, with friendly service - give it a go

RavenLordBattleProd8000i said...

Where abouts is it Hemong?

Ocean fish bar is far superior to Kingfish. Kingfish always tastes like its been sitting there all day. Nefis over Chubbys any day of the week, barring the BOGOF on Chubbys medium pizza. For Curry, Meghna is the best in WP but better places in surrounding areas that deliver. Chinese, can't beat the canteen - stay away from their beef dishes though.

Debbie said...

You must be mistaken, Indulgence Café has not been open that long.

Jane said...

Someone is being spiteful...get your facts right love it only opened this year! And its healthier food, why on earth would there be a chain smoking chef? I go in Indulgence cafe many a weekend with the kids, its absolutely lovely food!

I have just come back from a very pleasant lunch at the Brook. Both Mrs WP and I are feeling very full and even WP Junior enjoyed most of his plate of fish coujons from his high chair. The meal is probably best summed up by the fact the Mrs WP was impressed (that doesn't happen very often) and there is likely to be another visit soon which includes Nono WP (that's Grandpa WP for those without Italian relatives...) This is the first time I have had a meal there since the renovations and it was nice to sit and take in the new décor. They have obviously put a lot into it and I think it works well. From around 1:30 it was quite full and apparently there were people waiting for tables (admittedly this is Sunday lunch) so I'm assuming we are not the only people who have had a good 'Brook experience' recently.

was craving for a decent curry. went to Meghna tonight and devoured their house speciality. superbly wonderful food. efficient prompt service with complimentary deserts. Love you guys. I'm coming again.

Popped into The Brook the other evening for a glass of merlot while outside was a true storm ablowin! I was so disappointed with the bar staff's cold, indifferent, seemingly couldn't care less attitude to service. There was no 'good evening' or any pleasntry at all....just a lift of the head waiting for the order. Hardly any thanks when I'd paid. I really don't understand that sort of service when you have a business that really is very reliant on local custom for survival. You should be bending over backwards to make sure local customers want to return. It's a shame because the rooms are quite relaxing.
Well, this 'local' will not be returning anytime soon...unless I hear a big change of attitude towards customers.

Food good - atmosphere lacking. Anniying that they wont rake debit card, it's cash only! Hiwever - it's good to have a coffee shop nearby. What's with the awful looking mens hairdressers - orange paintwork an eyesore!

newcomer said...

Motspur tandoori - very good and they deliver!

Does KFC even qualify as good healthy food?! Doubtful

Fabulous food!

Well la maman opened its doors after renovations and it looks a bit more open and the food is definitely better than last time . I hear they have a new head chef .friendly service and good reasonably priced foods

Desperados in N Cheam could do with some manners too!
Hardly a glance from the owner(?) let alone a' good evening'. the meal was reasonable, but in this climate, nobody should be complacent

We went to the Brook for the first time ever on Saturday early evening of 15th Feb. The owners have done a great job with their refurb as it was sophiscated, comfortable and relaxing. We sat in the main restaurant having a three course meal, the food was great and reasonably priced, Can't fault anything at all as had an enjoyable experience and will be eating there as often as we can. We all in Worcester Park should try to support The Brook as we don't want it to end up like The Worcester Park Tavern. Now that the owners have done away with their awful late night Friday and Saturday trashy tacky loud music which kept locals awake every week we will be going regulary and hope others will give it a try too.

We went to Osaka on Saturday 15th February. Great atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent food. I can highly recommend the Spicy Pork Belly - very tasty! Only disappointment was that they were out of house red, so we had to opt for a more expensive bottle of wine.

The Nelson pub
This is easily the best pub in the area for the middle to elders amongst us, the pub is always warm, due mainly to the two open fires that are nearly always on.
The customers are mostly regulars and all friendly as are the staff, the manager is not so good but the staff more than make up for it.
The beer is always good and the food is always what it says on the tin. The head chef Ian has cooked at far more up market venues and prides himself on the taste of the food and the pub got 5 stars on the cleanliness, unlike 90% of the food outlets in Worcester Park.
There is music on Saturday nights, normally of a good standard and a quiz night on Tuesdays which is well attended and very competitive.
All in all the pub to use if you want to have a chat and not worry about any trouble happening.
I must say my choice of pub if I was a tad younger and like to watch sport would easily be the North End Tavern.
The pub is run by the same chain who own the Nelson, the land lady Kim is a lovely warm girl, who runs it strict but all the staff are wonderful, very friendly, very efficient and always willing to chat if your lonely.
The pub used to have a 'rough' reputation but that is not the case now, the customers are all happy go lucky, yes there are trade workers in there but they are never a problem and mix with the older people well.
Get down there and watch your sport you won't be dissapointed.

Thanks Doug...sounds great. Although for me probably just too far a walk from Central road. Will pop in this summer sometime though!!

Had an awful experience at kingfisher at worcester park last Friday, the chips which u would expect to be fresh on a Friday evening looked like they were old as they were hard and dry and not the texture you expect. We were eating in and queried the chips and got the rudest service and no apology or explanation except to say they are all like that with another dry plate slammed down. The batter for the fish was also really overlooked and too greasy. We were so disappointed with food and service, even the table was dirty and the menu was sticky. Seems to have such potential with location and seating and usually friendly men serving at the front. Even the orange juice tasted really watered down and cost £2.10. We got fish and chips and sausage and chips with a coke an a orange and paid £18 which was not good value considering the poor quality and service. When we did not eat our food there was no question about whether our meal was ok.

Ocean fish bar and the small traditional chip shop in north cheam are both brilliant so will go back their in future, shame about kingfish and I hope they improve as could be a nice chippy

Spud said...

I always go to the Ocean Fish Bar since I've never been disappointed. They never cook too much ahead of time which means everything feels fresh. Also the owners (I think they are husband and wife) make a really good batter. I was thinking of popping into the Kingfisher soon to test it out. However, I won't be now...rather stick with what I know is good.

Guest said...

Did the owner send you a rude text message afterwards, after taking a disliking to you due to your age?
No ... Didn't think so.

Thought I'd try Born Sushi for the first time at the weekend. Just ordered some chicken noodles as my wife is not big on Sushi/Sashimi. Wow! really tasty and really fresh. Friendly staff and, by far, the nicest waiting area of any WP takeaway. Will definitely be trying something a bit more adventurous next time. Recommended.

Have used them a couple of times (including Saturday night). Had noodles and a large sushi platter - can only echo the above, both were very good quality and very tasty.
